Project for Inria Rennes

  • ue5

Project for our client, team VirtUs from the French national research centre Inria Rennes, in the fourth year of my CMGT bachelor's degree. The purpose was to develop a good VR experience in which the user could engage with realistic virtual persons while engaged in the experience. It gives the user a one-of-a-kind experience and serves as a beneficial tool for the client's ongoing study.

My tasks included the development of a dialogue system that allowed the player to select answers in order to maintain immersion. I also tried implement a speech recognition system to provide a more natural method of interacting, but it was not included in the final product because of inadequate dependability. I worked with a motion capture suit to record animations for the metahumans. An IK body was added to offer the player a stronger sense of presence and feedback on their movement.

Used technologies: Movella's XSense motion capture suit MVN Link, metahumans, Unreal Engine 5.1

Mixed Reality project for VR Amsterdam

As part of my graduation project, I was part of a small team developing a multiplayer game played in an open arena in mixed reality, allowing players to see both the game's virtual elements and their real surroundings.

I was in charge of researching and implementing every component of the project's mixed reality (MR). Understanding the features available for MR in general, and specifically on the Quest Pro and Quest 2, how they work, their technical implementation, and suitability for the project's concept (for example, how player tracking in a space works or how an origin of a scene is remembered by the MR device) were all part of this.

Another feature of the project was that the final product was created for an actual VR arcade in Amsterdam, which my team visited on multiple occasions to test and discuss the game's current state with the customer.

The most difficult task was understanding the features, potential, and constraints of an unfamiliar platform, making judgements based on this understanding while keeping to a concept, and communicating all of this to a non-technically experienced client.

My most valued outcomes from this projects are the knowledge gained about the possibilities of current MR devices, understanding their features (at leas the theory of how they work) and the need to be able to explain your work to anyone regardless of their technical background.

I was also able to learn a lot about Spatial Anchors, which were a brand new feature at the time I was working on this project and allowed developers to preserve persistent spatial data between sessions of the application's lifetime (Demo video).

About me

Hello again!

I am an enthusiastic developer and also a CMGT student in the Netherlands who wishes to become an XR expert in the future!

I love VR and AR technology! It is something new and unusual that lets you make life a lot more interesting. I wish to work on projects that let the user experience something awesome, unusual and memorable. For instance, an interactive exhibition or an AR hunting game in the city or location-based experience.

My work experience includes a five-month internship at DIVR Labs where I was working on their great location-based VR game the Lost Lab as a VR developer intern.

Regarding my education, I am currently about to finish my Creative Media and Game Technologies bachelor's at Saxion University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands. My path of study is engineering, which means I focus on programming and overall development mainly in video game engines for various platforms. Thanks to the study, I can solve complex problems in the creative media industry and effectively work in a team.

My expertise consists of three years of experience with Unity and four in C#. I have basics in C++ and I am experienced with Unreal Engine 5.1. Besides game development for computers, I have also experience with AR development in Unity engine (Vuforia, ARCore) for Android and with VR development in Unity and Unreal Engine 5.1 for various VR headsets.

In the future, I would like to learn more about location-based VR, how to effectively design MR experiences for users with different backgrounds and continue on working in multidisciplinary teams.
